Support with transition to primary school

Before your child starts primary school

If you live in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and your child is starting primary school, you can check:

If you want more help, get advice and support for families from the Families Information Service. They run sessions to help you choose a school and fill in the forms you need to complete.

Choosing a school if your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

The SEND Assessment and Review Service will help you enter your preferred primary school choice.

They’ll consult the schools and tell you the outcome.

You’ll get the final decision about school placements in January.

By 15 February, you’ll receive an updated EHCP with the name of the primary school your child will attend in September.

Transition arrangements

Primary schools will have their own transition arrangements which may include:

  • home visits
  • visits to school to spend time in the classroom
  • meetings for parents

Ask your child’s early years setting about their transition arrangements for children starting primary school.

Children with complex needs

We give additional support to help children with a range of complex needs including those who:

  • have a lower level of special educational needs or disability, with a focus on those who get SEND support
  • are in our care, also known as looked after children
  • have received behaviour support in their early years setting

This support includes a discussion with parents and the early years setting to plan for the transition with the primary school.

They will also identify a Lead Professional to manage your child’s transition who will:

  • make sure you have the information you need before September
  • organise a transition meeting

Children with an EHCP

If a child has an EHCP, there will be a discussion with parents and the setting to plan for the transition.

At the Team Around the Child meeting, we’ll choose a Lead Professional who will arrange a transition meeting to support your child as they move to primary school.
