Using kitchen worktops and equipment
Kitchen worktops and cupboards
If your worktops are too high or too low or you cannot access, reach of lift items from kitchen cupboards we may recommend:
- using shelving instead
- changing height of worktops
- using perching stools to rest on at worktops
- keeping items on the worktops instead of in cupboards
Bins and rubbish
If your bins are hard to access or use, we may recommend:
- using a smaller bin
- moving bins to a location that’s easier to get to
- using a carrier or bag inside the bin
- getting a bin with a touch lid
If you need help to get to or move your bins outside for collection, we may recommend:
- smaller bins
- using little and often bags
- keeping bins closer to where they'll get collected so you do not have to move them as far
- Asking the council for support to take your bins out
Kettle
If your kettle is hard to use or lift, we may recommend:
- smaller kettle or a travel kettle
- a kettle tipper which you attach to your kettle that tilts to pour water
- one touch hot water dispenser, water heater or machine
- only filling the kettle up part way
Oven and grill
If it’s hard to access or use your oven or grill, we may recommend:
- making space on work surfaces next to the oven
- trolley to transfer food
- microwave
- cooking machines like slow cookers
- lightweight saucepans
- sieve food holders in saucepans
Taps
If it’s hard to use your taps, we may recommend:
- tap turners which fit over your taps and make them easier to turn with a lever
- repositioning taps to the front of the sink
- loosening tight taps
- removing plugs if there’s a risk of leaving taps on to avoid flooding
Kitchen utensils
If it’s hard to access or use kitchen utensils, we may recommend:
- non-slip mats on worktops
- large handled cutlery
- trolley to move items between surfaces
- lightweight or plastic crockery
Washing machine or fridge
If it’s hard to access or lift items from washing machines or fridges, we may recommend:
- clearing items away from surfaces
- bump on stickers to help you find and identify controls on machines
- altering the height of washing machines, fridges or freezers
