Getting up from and using furniture
Chairs and sofas
If you find it difficult sitting down or standing up from chairs or sofas, we may recommend:
- using chairs with armrests on both sides
- not using extra cushions as they can reduce armrest support and make it harder to transfer
- measuring chair or sofas to make sure it’s high enough so that when you’re sitting your knees are the same height or higher than the seat
- raising chairs or sofas that are too low
- new chairs or sofas if they’re too high
- raising recliner chairs that rise and lower to help you sit down or stand up from them
- raising from the base of the chair and not from the seat
Bed
If your bed is too high or too low, we may recommend:
- raising it with raisers
- lowering it by removing any wheels or legs holding it up from the ground
- an adjustable bed
- bed lever handle
- leg lifter or pillow lifter
- stand aids or hoists
Wardrobes and drawers
If its hard to reach drawers, push them in or pull them out, we may recommend:
- keeping clothes somewhere else
- open shelving
- accessible shelves or rails
