Getting around your home
Corridors, pathways and hallways
Corridors and pathways can be difficult if:
- you have a condition that impacts your balance
- the surface is uneven, steep, narrow or too wide
- there are trip hazards
We may recommend:
- metal grabrails or railings
- levelling surfaces
- maintaining or clearing foliage like leaves from paths
- clearing areas of items including removing loose mats or rugs
- rehanging gates or doors to open on another side
- additional or improved hallway lighting
Door steps or stairs
If you have too many door steps or they’re too steep, narrow or uneven we may recommend:
- levelling the surface of the steps if they’re uneven
- metal grabrails
- non slip surfaces
- porch covers for bad weather
- making the height of a step lower for example, adding two smaller steps
- temporary or adjustable ramps
- colour contrast on step edges
For stairs we may recommend:
- additional handrails
- grab rails like a newel rail for turning corners of the stairs
- clearing stairs of items
- changing flooring
- downstairs toilets
- downstairs living
- lift options like a stair lift or through floor lift
Front door and doorways
We may suggest changes if :
- your front door is too heavy
- the threshold is too high
- doorways is too narrow
- there's not enough space to move around
We may recommend:
- replacing your door with a light weight one
- using a different entrance to the property
- metal grabrails
- lower or level access threshold or door frame
- widening the doorway
- rehanging the door to open on another side
Flooring, mats and rugs
If your floor is slippery or there are trip hazards, we may recommend:
- changing flooring
- removing loose mats or rugs and never putting them in doorways
- colour contrasting at doorways to new rooms or before steps
- contrasting colours or patterns at the edges of mats and rugs
- carpet tape to stick rugs or mats down
