Letter box and post  

If you cannot bend down to get your mail, we may recommend:  

  • fixing a post basket to your door 
  • basket with long handle beneath the letter box 
  • reaching aids like a helping hand grabber or long handled reacher 

Locks and handles 

If you have limited range to turn handles or keys or have low grip strength, we may recommend:  

  • chaning the handle 
  • key turners 
  • intercom 
  • key safe 
  • automatic door opener 
  • digital door lock 
  • changing a knob style handle for lever style handle 

Gas or electric meters, heating, sockets and fireplaces 

If it’s hard to access meters, heating, sockets or fireplace controls we may recommend: 

  • moving meters, heating switches or sockets 
  • getting a carer to record your meter readings online 
  • wireless smart meter 
  • movement activated lighting 
  • online thermostat control services such as Hive  
  • heat timer switches 
  • products like Amazon Echo or Google Home so you can change heat settings through voice control  
  • extensions to sockets 
  • plugs with handles to hold 
  • using central heating instead of fireplaces 
  • smoke detectors and asking for a free fireplace safety check from the London Fire Brigade 
  • electric time switch for electric fireplaces 

Lighting 

If your home is too dark due to visual impairments, we may recommend: 

  • different lighting or light bulbs 
  • additional lighting 
  • colour contrasting walls or decor 
  • socket extensions 
  • moving light switches 
  • products like Amazon Echo or Google Home so you can control lighting through voice control 

Curtains and window openers 

If it’s hard to reach windows or open or close curtains, we may recommend:  

  • lighter curtains  
  • blinds 
  • stick-on-plastic to obscure glass  
  • window opener extensions to handles 
  • automatic window openers 
  • window restrictors so they cannot open as wide 

Telephones 

If it’s hard to use your phone, we may recommend:  

  • phones with large buttons 
  • online phone services you can use through a tablet or handheld device  
  • pre-inputting or setting direct redial for numbers you phone often 
  • using a mobile phone 
  • products like Amazon Echo or Google Home so you can phone people through voice control
