SEND Outreach services: Autism Outreach Service
Support for children with autism
The Autism Outreach Service helps children with autism achieve their learning goals.
They provide specialist advice for schools from professionals including:
- specialist teachers
- a Speech and Language Therapist
- Outreach Workers
- an Occupational Therapist
The also offer:
- visits and ongoing support for individual children
- training opportunities for schools to better understand autism and learn good educational practice
- training and support for staff to set up specialist interventions in school. This is free to all schools and staff in the Royal Borough of Greenwich
- group-based interventions such as social skills and friendship groups
- smooth transitions through a structured programme for pupils. For example, when moving from primary to secondary school
Support for families of children with autism
They support families by providing targeted training for the child’s family after a diagnosis to improve understanding and ability to support their child.
This includes free parent training for the specific age group of children and young people
They also provide ongoing support, advice, and sign posting for individual families
Support for children with confirmed social communication disorder before diagnosis
They support children with social communication disorder by providing targeted support to pupils waiting a diagnostic assessment.
You can also purchase services for ongoing support for children before diagnosis.
They also offer an additional 'buy in' service to support children with social communication needs, many of whom will be waiting a diagnostic assessment for autism.
This includes a Social Communication Outreach Worker to visit your school one day a week to help deliver interventions to this group of children.
