Apply for a Council Tax discount if you're an unpaid carer

Overview

We may not count unpaid carers when working out how many people live in a property. This is also known as being disregarded.

We'll disregard you if the person you care for gets:

  • an Attendance Allowance
  • the middle or highest rate of the care component of a Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • the standard or enhanced rate of the daily living activity component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • the highest rate of increase in their disablement pension
  • an increase in their Constant Attendance Allowance

You do not need to be getting Carer's Allowance to apply.

Check who's disregarded for Council Tax.

How much discount you could get

This depends on how many people over 18 live in the property.

If you're the only adult living with the person who needs care, you could get a 25% discount.

If you and the person who needs care also live with other 'disregarded' people, you could get a 50% discount.

You will not get a discount if you and the person who needs care live with other adults who are not disregarded.

Even if you're disregarded, you'll need to apply for a discount or exemption. You will not get it automatically.

WarningYou must pay Council Tax while you wait for us to decide if you're eligible for a discount. If you do not pay, we'll start the Council Tax recovery process.
