When your child is suspended or excluded

Educating your child while they’re suspended or excluded

Whether your child is suspended or excluded from school, they’ll continue their education.

For the first 5 days your child’s school will give them work to do at home.

From the sixth day, we’ll arrange suitable, full-time education. We may send them to a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) or Alternative Education Provision (AEP) initially. This is usually a short-term solution and we’ll apply our Fair Access Protocol to offer them a place in a new school.

Staying at home

It’s important that your child stays at home during school hours for the first 5 days of the suspension or exclusion. If your child is found in a public place and you do not have a good reason, you may be issued with a penalty notice.

Children in our care

For children in our care, schools should:

  • only suspend or exclude them as a very last resort and consider that they may have unmet social and emotional needs
  • proactively support foster carers and work with us to avoid suspension or exclusion
  • discuss their concerns with us at the earliest opportunity to consider alternatives

If your child is in our care and at risk of suspension or exclusion, contact us at looked-after-children-education@royalgreenwich.gov.uk

Children with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

Schools should avoid excluding pupils with an EHCP other than in the most exceptional circumstances.

If your child has an EHCP and at risk of suspension or exclusion, contact us at special-needs@royalgreenwich.gov.uk to request an emergency review.
