Where to search and tips on viewing

You can search for properties online, including websites like:

• Spare Room
• Rightmove
• Zoopla
• DSS move
• Open Rent
• Nuroa
• MovingSoon

You can also speak to estate agents in person.  

Get ready to view properties

Before you visit properties:

• make a shortlist of suitable properties that you'd like to visit
• read all the property details to make sure they meet your needs
• think who you could give as a reference for the rent, for example your employer, ex-employer, college tutor or other professional person
• contact the landlords or agents directly and arrange viewings

View properties and ask questions

Ask a friend to go with you or tell them where you're going and how long you expect to be.

Take something to make notes with, for example, if you see things that need repairing or any signs of damp.

Ask questions and make sure you understand what the landlord or agent is offering. For example:

• how long is the tenancy and would the landlord agree to a longer fixed period?  
• who is responsible for paying bills like electricity, gas, water and council tax?
• does the property come with furniture?
• does the property have central heating, and does it work properly?
• is the property safe, for example, are the locks working?
• what are the rules about pets?

If you experience DSS discrimination

You can complain if you see "no DSS" in a property listing, or the landlord or agent will not help you because you claim benefits. "No DSS" policies are unlawful.
