How to tell us

A relative or representative of the person who's died should tell us about the death as soon as possible. You can tell us:

  • using the Tell Us Once service
  • by contacting us directly

Using the Tell Us Once service

If you register the death at the registry office, you'll get a unique Tell Us Once reference number.

You can use this to tell most government organisations in one go.

Use Tell us Once (GOV.UK)

You must pay Council Tax while you wait for us to decide if you're eligible for a discount. If you do not pay, we'll start the Council Tax recovery process.

Contact us directly

We're usually told that a person has died through Tell Us Once, or by one of our registrars. If you cannot use Tell Us Once, you can contact us directly.

You'll need to tell us the:

  • address of the property
  • Council Tax account number, if you have it
  • name of the deceased person
  • name and address of their next of kin or the person dealing with their affairs

We need a copy of the:

  • death certificate
  • grant of probate or letters of administration, when you have them

If the person owned the property, we'll also need the full addresses of any other properties they owned when they died.

If the person was a tenant, we'll also need a copy of the tenancy agreement.
