If your annex is empty and you cannot rent it out

If your property has an annex with its own Council Tax band, it's exempt from Council Tax if:

  • it's empty
  • you cannot rent it out to someone else without breaching planning control under Section 171A of the Town and Country Planning Act

Both of these criteria must apply for the annex to be exempt.

What you need to apply

You'll need to fill in and send us the application form with proof that you're eligible for the discount.

On the form you'll need to tell us:

  • your name and address
  • the Council Tax account number for your main house
  • the Council Tax account number for the annex

Proof we need

We need a copy of any planning restrictions that apply.
