Noise from stationary vehicles
Noise from vehicle repairs, horns, alarms, stereos and engines can cause a lot of disturbance to neighbours.
How to avoid causing a noise problem from a vehicle
If you own a vehicle or motorbike, you need to know about vehicle-related noise offences and take care not to commit them.
- you could be prosecuted, have your tools seized or even evicted if you cause a noise nuisance doing car repairs
- by law you must not sound your horn before 8am or after 11pm.
- you could be prosecuted if you let your car alarm ring for long periods of time - officers can break into a car to turn it off, or to tow the car away and you'll have to pay for the call-out. Make sure that your car alarm automatically turns off after five minutes of ringing.
- you could get a fine for playing car radios or stereos at a high volume
- you must not let an engine run while a vehicle is stationary. This is sometimes unavoidable but be considerate to neighbours that live close by
