Noise from home entertainment
This is the biggest cause of complaint between neighbours. Noise from televisions, radios and stereos is a growing problem.
Although any kind of music at high volume is noisy, today's music has a much heavier bass beat which penetrates buildings easily. Modern sound systems are also designed to give you more bass.
A thudding bass beat at 1am is a nuisance and an offence under the Environmental Protection Act, 1990.
How to avoid causing a noise problem from home entertainment systems
People need to rest from noise in the evening and at weekends, especially those with young children. You should:
- turn the volume down as it gets later into the evening, especially after 11pm
- keep loudspeakers away from the wall or floor between you and your neighbour
- use a speaker stand or have carpet under them to reduce vibration
- adjust the bass controls so there’s not too much bass beat
- use headphones wherever possible
People with hearing difficulties
If someone in your household has difficulty hearing, you could get an adaptor fitted to the television. It works by 'talking' directly to a hearing aid, so the volume does not need to be so high.
