Noise from house parties
A party can be an enjoyable celebration, or it can be a serious nuisance to the whole neighbourhood.
Modern sound systems mean that one noisy party can annoy a lot of people. There are things you can do to avoid upsetting your neighbours.
How to avoid causing a noise problem from a house party
You should:
- tell your neighbours in advance
- let them know what time the party will end
- go outside during the party to check the noise level
- keep the speakers away from the wall or floor between you and your neighbour
- use a speaker stand to avoid vibrations in the floor
- keep windows closed if possible
- do not let your party flow onto the balcony or the street
- know your guests and make sure you can trust them to enjoy themselves responsibly without causing disturbance to others
- make sure guests leave quietly
Serious noise nuisance
You could get a fine of up to £5,000 for serious noise nuisance. In some cases, we’ve worked with the police to remove people's stereo systems on the night of a party.
