Ask for support with caring for someone

About carer’s assessments

If you need support to continue to care for someone, you can request a carer’s assessment.

An assessment is not a test. It is a way for us to understand your strengths, what support networks you have and work with you to find the right support.

This may be advice, community support or paid services.

What happens in a carer's assessment

We will have an informal chat with you to ask you about your caring role and:

  • how it affects your life and wellbeing
  • what is working well and what you’d like to change
  • your feelings and choices about caring
  • what it limits you from doing such as working, studying, training, leisure
  • the impact it has on your relationships, social activities and your goals
  • what support you have now
  • what support you need from others such as family members, the local community and funded support from the council

We will not look at:

  • your financial circumstances to find out what free support you could be eligible for
  • issues with services. These can be referred to the appropriate professional

After we’ve spoken to you, we’ll give you information about support available to you such as equipment, assistive technology or services in the community.

If you are eligible for council support, we will contact you to work on a support plan and personal budget with you.
