Deaf Awareness Week 2026 runs from 4–10 May, aiming to raise awareness of hearing loss, celebrate Deaf culture, and break down communication barriers.
This is a UK wide annual awareness campaign, and this year’s theme is: “Right to Understand – Together, We Break Barriers.” The week highlights the need for inclusivity, encouraging the use of British Sign Language (BSL) and accessible communication, while challenging misconceptions about deafness.
Key Aspects and Goals:
- Focused on breaking barriers and improving access to communication.
- Celebrates Deaf culture and raises awareness of how to support deaf children and adults.
- To increase understanding of the diverse ways deaf people communicate—including BSL, lip-reading, and technology.
- Promote accessibility in workplaces and public spaces
Tips for Effective Communication:
- Face the person: Ensure your mouth is visible for lip-reading.
- Get attention first: Use a gentle tap on the shoulder or a wave.
- Speak clearly: Do not shout or exaggerate, as this makes lip-reading harder.
- Use alternatives: If needed, write things down or use visual aids.
- Reduce background noise: Move to a quieter area to facilitate conversation.
Resources:
- National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS): Offers information and support, especially for families with deaf children.
- RNID: Works with communities and partners across health, employment, research, government and more to change life for the better.
- Signature: We are the leading awarding organisation for British Sign Language (BSL) qualifications
- British Deaf Association (BDA): Offers resources, including finger-spelling charts.
- RBG Sensory Team for Deaf and vision impaired children - Find out more about how the team support families and schools in Greenwich.
Deaf awareness should be practiced year-round to build a more inclusive society.
