Advice about how schools meet the needs of children with SEND and how to get SEND support

How we support your child

If you’ve noticed your child needs more support to do or learn things at home or school, they may have special educational needs.

Any child or young person with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) will get support in:

  • nurseries or childminders
  • schools
  • further education institutes like colleges and 16 to 19 academies

All nurseries, schools or colleges support children to get an education that is suitable for them. This will help them achieve their potential.

If your child needs more help in school

Teachers at the school or college will monitor your child’s progress. This is what we call ordinarily available provision.

If you and the school think your child needs more support, they may talk to you about SEND Support.

Education, health and care needs assessments

Some children may need more support even if they’re already getting help.

In this case, the school, nursery or a professional will apply for an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment.
