I'm preparing for adulthood
Turning 18 and becoming an adult can bring lots of changes for a young person.
If you have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), it may also mean changes to the support you get now.
This support can help you become more independent and prepare for adulthood.
Help to prepare for your future
We will help you prepare for adulthood from the age of 14.
Knowing what you like, your strengths and what you want your life to be like in the future can help you work out what support you may need.
What to prepare for

Support once you turn 18
You will still get support once you turn 18.
We help you plan early to make sure the right support is in place when you need it.
The support you get may change based on your strengths and goals.

How your support may change
Things like the type of health and housing support you get may change when you're an adult.
This is because it will focus on how to help you be more independent.
The following things may also change when you’re an adult:
- benefits you can claim as an adult
- how you pay for your care and activities
- activities and ways to meet people during the day
- mental and physical health support once you turn 25
- housing options once you turn 25
- job opportunities
Changes for your parents or carers
When you're an adult, you will help shape the support you need.
This will be based on your goals and outcomes. You will be given the choice to organise most of your care and activities, giving you more independence.
If a parent or carer needs support for themselves, they can request a parent carer needs assessment.
