Children with additional needs

If your child has an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

There’s a separate in-year admissions process for children with an EHCP.

If your child has an EHCP, contact our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities team at special-needs@royalgreenwich.gov.uk

If your child is being assessed for an EHCP, contact your child’s current school to discuss a move. This is particularly important if you plan to apply for another school due to any other reasons than moving address. A change of school may cause a delay in the EHCP process.

Medical and social care needs

If you’re thinking about changing your child’s school because they have medical or social needs, consider that:

  • in most cases, mainstream schools can meet medical and social care needs
  • we apply strict criteria when classifying a child as needing chronic medical and social care. This ensures that only the children and families most in need benefit from being given priority over other children
  • a child is only awarded priority admission under exceptional circumstances
  • the decision is based on the criteria only, not on whether the child has SEND or an EHCP
  • where the need relates to a member of the family, they must both live at the same address

if you feel there’s a specific reason we should offer your child a particular school, you need to:

  • state this in your application
  • submit evidence of the chronic or acute medical condition or social care need with your application
