Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site

Our World Heritage Site is protected. This is to make sure new developments enhance its character and preserve its special buildings.

Planning consent to alterations often extends to the boundaries of properties. For example, walls on the boundary of the site including all the way around Greenwich Royal Park.

We treat alterations to properties within the site like applications from properties in conservation areas.

Where the World Heritage Site is

The three conservation areas of East Greenwich, West Greenwich and Blackheath form the site's buffer zone. Both this and the site are also protected by conservation area designation.

The site includes the:

  • historic town centre around Cutty Sark, the Old Royal Naval College
  • whole Royal Park and the landmark buildings within it
