Woolwich town centre, Greenwich town centre, and Eltham High Street, including the Eltham sign, Abbey Wood (Wilton Road) and Plumstead High Street, will be jet washed twice a year in order to make them cleaner, greener, and more vibrant.   

Councillor Averil Lekau, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said, “We want our neighbourhoods to be vibrant, safe and attractive with community services that meet the needs of local residents.   

“The jet washing programme is key to meeting this goal. By reinstating this service, we’ll ensure our town centres are clean and welcoming places providing valued services for residents while supporting the local economy. From listening to our residents, we knew this was something we needed to allocate resources to.    

“We’re so grateful to our local businesses, too, for their help in ensuring our high streets stay clean and tidy for everyone. Together we can all take pride in our community spaces.”   

Councillor Ann-Marie Cousins, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Enforcement, said: "The return of the jet washing programme will help make our town centres much cleaner, well-maintained places. We would encourage pedestrians to help us take care of these areas, and to use bins to dispose of gum and litter."   

“On top of our street cleaning programme, we are cracking down on fly tipping, and will clear fly-tipping from any land we are responsible for. We will take action against anyone caught illegally dumping rubbish and I encourage local people to report any incidences to us.”   

The jet washing service which stopped in 2020, was reinstated by a Cabinet decision earlier this year and is funded through the Council's budget for 2023 to 2024 that focuses on protecting front line services and investing in key areas that make a real difference to residents.   

Reporting fly-tipping  

If you witness a fly-tipping incident in progress, you can help by giving us details. Please email envirocrime@royalgreenwich.gov.uk with these details:   

• the name and address of the individual(s) committing the offence if you know who it is   

• a description of the individual(s)   

• details of any vehicles involved including make, colour and registration if possible   

• any company details (i.e. name of the site of a company van or vehicle)   

• the time and where you saw them committing the offence.   

You can also report cleaning problems on streets and in parks in the borough, such as littering, fly-tipping, graffiti or overflowing litter bins using Fix My Street.
