Following huge success last year, Play Streets are coming back for summer 2023 – giving more neighbours the chance to close their road to traffic for a few hours a day.

By restricting traffic for a few hours regularly, we’re playing a role in reducing emissions in our borough – as well as promoting a healthy active lifestyle.

Cllr Denise Scott-McDonald, Cabinet Member for Health and Adults’ Social Care, said: “Play Streets can be anything from neighbours enjoying a coffee in the sun, to children playing hop-scotch or football. It could be a communal BBQ or a street-wide exercise class – however you want to reimagine your road, Play Streets give you the chance to build relationships and improve your health and wellbeing.

“They’re easy to organise and the benefits speak for themselves. Speak to the Council now to make sure you apply before the deadline.”

Sessions can run for a morning or an afternoon at a regular time slot and are stewarded and managed by neighbours from the street.

If you’d like to host a Play Street check your street is eligible and recruit a group of neighbours who want to get involved before submitting an application.

The deadline to apply for Play Streets events held this summer and autumn is Friday, May 12.
