As well as celebrating the cultural, historical and political achievements of women, this year’s #BreakTheBias theme is encouraging people across the globe to recognise and actively call out gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping when we see it.  

The Council and its partners will be holding an exciting programme of events across the borough for residents of all ages to get involved in. 

The Royal Borough of Greenwich in association with the HER Centre will also host celebrations at Clockhouse Community Centre, SE18 5QL from 12 to 3pm. Speeches on women’s health, safety and wellbeing will run alongside information stalls, massage and taster Thai Chi sessions. A free creche for under-fives will also be available and lunch is provided.   

From 3.30pm, Councillor Denise Scott-Mcdonald, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Good Growth will join Dr Rosemary Lobban from the University of Greenwich and footballer Jess King on the panel of Charlton Athletic’s free webinar.

Leisure centres will be offering a free one-day pass to residents, with all-inclusive gym, swimming and classes for all. 

The Plumstead Centre will be hosting an open day from 10am with activities aimed to inspire women to feel happier, healthier and get more active in a welcoming and fully inclusive environment. Free soft play and face painting will be available throughout the day, as well as library readings, classes including boxing and ballet fit, free tea and coffee and an open mic poetry night.

Libraries and Leisure centres will also be offering free events to celebrate women’s history throughout the month, featuring readings and talks with female authors including Nadine Matheson and Stella Oni.  

Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equality said: “International Women’s Day is a chance to celebrate women’s history, as well as the brilliant women making a difference to us all today within our own communities.” 

“I think it’s important to remember that gender equality is something we are all responsible for and can make a difference to. I look forward to seeing residents having fun, and learning too, at events across the borough.”
