Love Your Neighbourhood by taking part in the Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean is here! From 13 to 29 March, join thousands of volunteers across the country organising litter picks to show they love where they live. Take part solo, or get friends, family and neighbours involved.

You can request a litter picking kit and arrange collection of the rubbish you collect by emailing  waste.advisors@royalgreenwich.gov.uk. You can also leave any litter you collect in bags next to public litter bins to be picked up*. Don’t forget to let us know how many bags you collect and send photos of your team in action to the same email address, so we can show off your hard work.

Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member Inclusive Economy, Business, Greenwich Supports and Environmental Services, said: “We all want our borough to be a vibrant, sustainable and attractive place, and by working together for the Great British Spring Clean, even small actions can have a big impact.

“Whether you collect one bag of litter or ten, you’ll be making a big difference to your community, and we’ll provide equipment if you need it. Beyond March, there are lots of other ways to make a positive impact to your local area too, through our Love Your Neighbourhood scheme.

“Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who are already litter picking in their communities and helping us keep our streets and parks clean and tidy.”

Environment Champion, Felicity, said: “Our street cleaner does a good job when they come round but it feels good to help out in your own neighbourhood. Through litter picking and weeding on our street, I’ve met so many of my neighbours and made lots of new friends.

“By volunteering to take care of your area, you can have fun, meet people and get a bit of exercise, as well as feeling that you’ve done your bit for your local environment and made where you live a much nicer place.”

The Great British Spring Clean is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. Each year, more than 400,000 volunteers' clear litter from UK streets, parks and beaches.

Feeling inspired? Love Your Neighbourhood is a volunteer scheme in the Royal Borough of Greenwich for residents who want to help keep their area clean and well-maintained during the Great British Spring Clean – and beyond!

You can show some love for where you live by taking part in community clean-ups, taking care of our parks, and reporting issues like litter or graffiti in public spaces.

*This only applies to street litter – any other waste or large items left by public bins is fly-tipping and you could be fined £1,000. You can book a bulky waste collection or use the Reuse or Recycling Centre to get rid of larger items.
