Council’s joint operation to tackle anti-social behaviour, littering, and unlicensed HMOs

A Community Safety Enforcement Officer and a Parking Officer knock at a door

Last week, a joint intervention took place to tackle anti-social behaviour, noise nuisance, littering, illegal parking, and unlicensed rented properties in Plumstead following a rise in incidents.

Councillor Taggart-Ryan and council officers from Environmental Health, Private Landlord Property Licensing, Waste Services, Parking Enforcement, Anti-Social Behaviour, and Integrated Enforcement, joined forces with the Metropolitan Police to address problematic issues in the area.

The teams visited more than 120 properties in Plumstead and spoke to residents about their concerns in the area, including what actions the council could take to improve them.

Councillor Rachel Taggart-Ryan, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Enforcement said: “The purpose of the day was to reassure residents that we are listening and truly do care about the issues they’re facing in their neighbourhoods.

“We are particularly focused on unlicensed HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation) and the impact that some of these properties have on residents. Properties of concern have been noted and they will be investigated.

“We will continue to organise these intervention days in different areas to help reduce anti-social behaviour and environmental offences across the borough, helping residents feel safer.”

During the operation the team noted fly-tips, properties which are believed to be unlicensed HMOs or rented properties which require a licence, and properties where there might be drug-related activities. All these incidents are taken seriously and will be dealt with by the council or police as appropriate.
