Our World Heritage Site is protected to ensure new developments enhance its character and to preserve its special buildings. The need for planning consent to alterations extends in many cases to the boundaries of properties, such as walls on the boundary of the site including all the way around Greenwich Royal Park.

Alterations to properties within the World Heritage Site are all treated like applications from properties in conservation areas.

Where is the World Heritage Site?

The three conservation areas of East Greenwich, West Greenwich and Blackheath form the site's buffer zone. Both this and the site are also protected by conservation area designation.

The site includes the historic town centre around Cutty Sark, the Old Royal Naval College and the whole Royal Park and the landmark buildings within it.
