Tiles through Time with the Ottomans (26th July) Kitchen floors to the most beautiful rooms in history, tiles are all around. For more than 600 years, people in the Ottoman Empire relied on tiles for decorating and for keeping their homes safe from fire – just like in England! Find fun patterns in real Ottoman tilework, then do it yourself on your very own clay tile to take home.

Sweet as Marzipan with the Ottomans (2nd August) Have you tried marzipan icing? This delicious cake topper has a long history in Jewish culture – particularly in the Ottoman Empire! Discover the way Ottomans turned this yummy almond treat into flowers and fruit, and then make some to take home (Allergy warning: marzipan contains almonds and is not safe for children with nut allergies).

Busy Bees (9th August) What are bees so busy doing all day? Let’s explore how bees make our lives better, from helping our gardens to grow to making honey. We’ll even make our very own bee feeders to help our new insect friends do their work.

Roaming Londinium with the Romans (16th August) Did you know that over 2,000 years ago, Romans were living here in Greenwich? Discover more about the lives of Roman-Britons in Greenwich, play with some Roman artefacts, and make your very own centurion helmet.

Blooming Butterflies (23rd August) Butterflies are all around – our gardens, in patterns on our clothing, even in Greenwich Heritage’s museum collections. Make your very own butterfly to take home – we can bet yours will stick around longer than a real one!

Write Like an Ancient Egyptian (30th August) What languages do you speak? English? Persian? Nepali? …Hieroglyphic? Learn about the fascinating and complex language used by the ancient Egyptians. Come up with your own secret message that only you can read and write it into your own sand slab.
