Explore the connections between the Ottoman Empire and our borough today in this new exhibition inspired by a gravestone recently discovered in our museum collections.
In 2022, a visitor to our museum collections made a remarkable discovery. A slab of rock, long unidentified and with mysterious etchings, was in fact an Ottoman gravestone dating back to the 18th century. Since then, we’ve been working with the University of Greenwich, Peace of Cake, and our local Muslim communities to discover the story behind this gravestone, and explore the connections between the Ottoman Empire and our borough today. Come explore a new exhibition spanning three centuries, and enjoy a series of workshops and events celebrating Ottoman history and modern Muslim life in Greenwich.
