If your property does not have a Council Tax band

Your property may not have a band if it's:

  • a new build
  • been converted, for example, from a house into flats

The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) will set your Council Tax band and tell us what it is. This can take up to 90 days and we cannot tell you how much to pay in the meantime.

We cannot send you a bill until we know your band. You'll be liable to pay Council Tax from the date you bought the property or moved in. This means that your instalments could be higher to cover the full bill over the remaining months left until the end of the financial year on 31 March.

You do not have to make payments while waiting for your band, but it may reduce your instalments later if you do. We strongly suggest that you set up a standing order to pay a provisional amount while you wait. You cannot set up a Direct Debit until we've sent you a bill.
