We do not count care home or hospital residents when working out how many people live in a property. This is also known as being 'disregarded'.

Check who's disregarded for Council Tax.

If you're now the only adult living at the property because someone in your household moved into a care home or hospital, you could apply for a 25% single person discount.

If the property's now empty because someone's moved into a care home or hospital, it will be exempt from Council Tax.

You must pay Council Tax while you wait for us to decide if you're eligible for a discount. If you do not pay, we'll start the Council Tax recovery process.

Who can apply

You can apply if someone has permanently moved out of their sole or main home to receive care at a:

  • care home
