When you're not eligible

You're not usually eligible if you have any of these example living arrangements.

If you're not sure you can call us on 020 8921 4147.

You sleep in separate bedrooms

You're in a couple and one of you is disabled. You sleep in separate bedrooms because of the partner's disability. The room already exists and has not been specifically adapted to meet the needs of the disabled person.

You live in a purpose-built property

You'll not usually get a discount unless the property has been adapted specifically to meet the individual needs of the person applying for the discount. This applies even if the property has been adapted to meet the needs of disabled people.

You sleep downstairs

You'll not usually get a discount if you live in a property with 2 or more floors, but you've moved your bed into the living room. This is because the room would also be used as a living room for everyone in the household.

You'll not usually get a discount if you've converted a downstairs room to a bedroom because you cannot use the stairs.

You use a room as a 'quiet room'

You'll not usually get a discount unless you:

  • have an additional room
  • can show that the room is in the most appropriate position in the property for it to be effective as a quiet room

You're confined to an upstairs bedroom

You'll not usually get a discount if you use an upstairs bedroom for a living room and to sleep in because you're mainly confined to your bed.

You have a room with extra facilities

You'll not usually get a discount if you have a room with extra heating or a hearing loop.

You have difficulty getting to the bathroom

You'll not usually get a discount if you need to use a commode.

You have a second bathroom or kitchen

You will not get a discount just because you have a second bathroom or kitchen. The room must be essential for and meet the needs of the disabled person. A separate toilet is not considered to be a second bathroom.
