Who can apply

To be eligible, you or the person you live with:

  • can be a disabled adult or child
  • must be permanently and substantially disabled
  • must need and be able to use a wheelchair indoors

The property must:

  • be the disabled persons only or main home
  • have a second bathroom or kitchen that's essential to meet the needs of the disabled person
  • have enough floor space to allow the disabled person to use their wheelchair inside
  • have an adapted room that's not a bathroom, kitchen or toilet that's mainly used and needed by the disabled person because of their disability

An adapted room is, for example, a:

  • specially built therapy or treatment room
  • room used to store medical equipment or machinery
  • room adapted for dialysis
  • specially adapted bedroom

You may not get a discount if you have some types of living arrangements. For example, if you've moved your bed downstairs. Read about when you're not eligible.

Care homes

A care home with disabled residents is not automatically eligible but you can apply.

You'll need to nominate a disabled resident. You must show that an additional room or wheelchair space in the home is essential to meet that resident's needs, even if it's used by other residents.

For example, the resident may need a second bathroom on the ground floor where their room is because they cannot use the bathroom on another floor.
