Corporate plan theme 1: The place to grow up

Outcome 2: Children and young people are happy and can thrive

We will help children and young people:

  • gain the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the future by working together to improve educational outcomes and reduce inequality
  • feel valued and connected by investing in welcoming places, activities and opportunities

Our commitments for activities for young people

We commit to:

  • 5 fully staffed youth hubs that are open 7 days a week with wraparound services
  • a £1.6 million Youth Opportunity Grant to fund a range of local activities and support

Our education, training and employment commitments

We commit to:

  • an early years strategy that prepares children for school, supports parents at every stage and makes sure families can access high quality childcare
  • champion reading for every child. We'll work with the Dolly Parton Foundation, schools and childcare settings so every child can discover the joy and power of reading
  • learning and resources for educations that strengthen standards, improve education, deliver better outcomes, share best practice and research
  • an opportunity and skills plan for young people aged 16 to 25 to help them get into education, training or work

Our special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) commitments

We commit to:

  • invest £3.64 million in schools for children with SEND
  • a new site for alternative provision site. This will bring education, health and care staff together in one place to support young people with SEND and their families
  • a SEND system that helps young people to flourish. We'll prepare for the SEND reforms and a new system in 2029 and make sure children get the right support earlier and closer to home, in mainstream settings when possible
