Protect yourself and your property from crime in autumn and winter

Protect your vehicle from theft

Keyless vehicles are increasingly at risk of being stolen. Wherever you park, there are things you can do to stop it from happening:

  • at home keep your key fob (and any spares) away from the car, doors, and windows
  • put your key fob in a signal-blocking pouch, like a Faraday Bag
  • turn off wireless signals on your key fob when you're not using it
  • use a steering wheel lock or car alarm
  • park in your garage or as close to your home as you can overnight

To stop items being stolen from your vehicle:

  • take valuables out of your car when you park, like shopping bags, phones, keys, sunglasses, wallets and loose change
  • close your windows and sunroofs
  • park in different places - thieves might notice behaviour patterns and break in when they know you’ll be gone for a long time
  • if you keep tools and equipment in your car, you can mark and register your property to deter burglars
  • try to park in illuminated and staffed car parks
  • install a tracker system which can increase the chance of getting your vehicle back if it’s stolen
