Regulated industrial processes

We regulate some types of industrial processes that release dust, smells or organic solvents into the air. The Environment Agency also regulates some industrial processes.

Types of regulated processes

There are two types:

  • Part A processes, regulated by the Environment Agency
  • Part B processes, regulated by us

Part A processes

These are larger industrial processes that could cause air pollution. Within Royal Greenwich, there are 4 Part A processes, at:

  • Greenwich Power Station, Old Woolwich Road, SE10
  • European Colour, Nathan Way, SE28
  • Tate and Lyle Limited Refinery, Tunnel Avenue, SE10
  • Tate and Lyle (Amylum) Ltd CHP Powerhouse, Tunnel Avenue, SE10

We have copies of the permits from the Environment Agency, and pollutant monitoring information. We have added these to our Part A register.

Find out more and apply for a Part A permit (GOV.UK)

Part B processes

These are smaller scale activities that could cause air pollution, like:

  • petrol stations
  • concrete crushers
  • cement batching plants
  • roadstone plants
  • vehicle resprayers

Chimney height approval

We also approve chimney heights for industrial and commercial boilers or furnaces. We base this on the type and amount of pollutants coming from a chimney. The correct height ensures the dispersal of the pollutants does not affect residents.
