When you need a permit
You need a Family entertainment centre gaming machine permit for premises that are entirely or mainly used for gaming machines. This includes small arcades in:
- holiday parks
- theme parks
- seaside resorts
We cannot issue permits to vehicles or vessels.
Gaming machine categories
Category D gaming machines
This permit allows you to offer any number of Category D machines. These are the lowest category of gaming machine and the only type that children and young people are allowed to play.
Category C gaming machines
To offer Category C gaming machines, you need to apply for 2 other licences instead.
- An Operating licence from the Gambling Commission.
- A Gambling licence for premises from us.
If you hold a Gambling licence for premises, you cannot apply for a Family entertainment centre gaming machine permit.
Before you apply
To apply, you need to provide a plan showing the layout of the premises.
You need evidence to show that you:
- carry out Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks on staff
- can deal with truanting schoolchildren and unsupervised young children
- can deal effectively with children causing problems on or around the premises
- you have a full understanding of the maximum stakes and prizes of the gambling permitted on unlicensed family entertainment centres
- have no relevant convictions as set out in Schedule 7 of the Gambling Act 2005)

To apply for a family entertainment centre gamaing machine permit, you need to download and complete our premises gambling licence application form:
