Transfer a premises alcohol licence

When you can transfer a licence

If you buy a premises that already holds a premises licence, you must transfer the premises licence into your name or business.

If the premises sells alcohol and the existing designated premises supervisor will no longer work at the premises after the transfer, you must also change the designated premises supervisor (DPS).

Change the premises DPS on GOV.UK

How to transfer a licence

Complete an application form to transfer a premises licence on GOV.UK

You also need to upload:

  • the application fee of £23
  • a transfer consent form from the existing licence-holder
  • a scan of your old licence (or an explanation of why you cannot send it)
  • proof of entitlement to work in the UK - see the list of documents that are accepted:

After you’ve requested the transfer

The police have 14 days if they want to object to the application.

If the police do not object, we’ll grant the application.

If the police do object, our Licensing Sub-Committee will hold a public hearing to make a decision on the application.

When a licence is transferred, the new licence holder becomes responsible for the annual continuation fee. If you do not pay this fee on time, we may suspend your licence. To avoid this, you should:

  • confirm when the next annual fee is due with the previous licence holder
  • if this is around the time the transfer is due to take place, determine who will be responsible for the fee payment, and do it as part of the handover of the premises
