Apply for a Council Tax discount if you're a care leaver

If you're a care leaver aged 18 to 25, you may not have to pay Council Tax. How much discount you get depends on who you live with.

You'll get a 100% discount if, either:

• you live by yourself
• everyone you live with is a care leaver

You'll get a 50% discount if everyone you live with is disregarded for Council Tax.

You'll get a 25% discount if you live with one other adult.

You'll need to apply for the discount. You will not get it automatically.

The discount will end when you either:

• turn 25
• move in with 2 or more people who are not care leavers or not disregarded

Who can apply

You must live in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

You can apply for yourself, or someone can apply for you.

What you need to apply

You'll need to email us and include:

• your full name
• your date of birth
• your address
• your Council Tax account number, if you know it
• the full names and dates of birth of everyone you live with

What happens next

It can take up to 21 days for us to process your application and decide if you're eligible.

We may ask you for more information.

If you're eligible for the discount, we'll send you an updated bill.

You must tell us within 21 days about any change in your circumstances that may affect your entitlement to a discount or exemption. If you do not tell us, you could get a £70 fixed penalty.

If we decide you're not eligible, we'll tell you in writing. You can appeal our decision.
