Request an occupational therapy assessment
If you cannot find the right equipment or adaptation to help you, you can request an occupational therapy (OT) assessment.
You do not need to pay for this assessment.
How an occupational therapy assessment can help you
Occupational therapists aim to improve your ability to do everyday tasks if you're having difficulties.
An OT assessment can help you to:
- regain skills and confidence to do daily tasks
- understand your strengths and what support could help you
- make sure your carer has the support they need to look after you
- find out what equipment and adaptations you need and arrange them

Paying for equipment and adaptations
If an OT decides you need equipment or minor adaptations to your home, you’ll usually get these for free.
For some equipment or larger home adaptations, you may need to pay or contribute. We’ll do a financial assessment to work out:
- how much you’ll need to pay
- whether you can get funding to help you, such as a Disabled Facilities Grant
You will not need a financial assessment if:
- you live in council housing
- the adaptation is for a disabled child
About Disabled Facilities Grants
If you’re disabled, we’ll check if you’re eligible to get a Disabled Facilities Grant to help pay for adaptations to your home.
You can also apply for this grant if you’re a landlord applying for a disabled tenant. To do this, contact our Adult Social Care team.
