Tell us your views on our bin collection proposals

Help us become a Zero Waste Borough

You’ve got important views on the work we do, which is why we want to hear them!

We’re always looking ahead and want to make sure our services work for our residents, as well as for the borough as a whole. A big focus for us over the coming years is how we can work with you to make a positive impact on the environment - through recycling. We are living in a climate emergency and we know that recycling has real power to help fight it.

By simply putting the right thing in the right bin you are making a huge difference and helping save the planet! Recycling is also important because processing rubbish costs us more than processing your recyclable waste. If we recycle more, the money we’d save could be invested in other important council services.

Our proposals

We are proposing changes to the way we collect your rubbish (in your black top bin), to make recycling easier for you so that it becomes second nature. The majority of UK councils have switched to fortnightly collections and they have all seen an increase in recycling rates.

We would like you to have your say on three options.

Option 1

Option 1 - collecting rubbish bins every other week

Reduce the frequency of when rubbish (black top) bins are collected to every two weeks. This could increase our recycling rate by around 5% and save the Council £460,000 per year.

Option 2

Option 2 - collecting rubbish weekly in a smaller bin

Collect your rubbish every week but the bin is smaller. This could increase our recycling rate by around 2.5% and save the Council £150,000 per year.

Option 3

Option 3 - collecting rubbish every other week, but in a smaller bin

Reduce the size of rubbish bins and collect them every two weeks. This could increase our recycling rate by around 7% and save the Council £612,000 per year.

We'd also like your views on how we can make it easier for you to reduce waste and recycle more.
