The law states that all schools must teach religious education (RE). It’s not part of the national curriculum, it’s the responsibility of the local council.
Royal Greenwich Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) is responsible for producing our local syllabus for RE.
Agreed syllabus for religious education
The agreed syllabus:
- is a statutory document
- outlines what schools in the borough should teach pupils in RE
- applies to pupils from Early Years Foundation Stage through to the end of sixth form
- is the result of work by members of local faith communities, teachers and councillors

The purpose of religious education
Religious education gives pupils the opportunity to learn about and from major religions. It aims to develop pupils' understanding of:
- beliefs, teachings and sources
- practices and ways of life
- forms of expression.
It also encourages pupils to reflect on and respond to:
- identity and belonging
- purpose, meaning and truth
- values and commitments.
How to withdraw your child from religious education
You have the right to withdraw your child from religious education in school. To do this, you need to contact the school’s headteacher.
