Help with getting your child to attend school

Your child might not want to go to school for various reasons. For example, they might:

  • feel anxious
  • have fallen behind in their schoolwork
  • not feel motivated at school
  • have fallen out with a friend, or miss a friend who has moved away

If you're having trouble getting your child to go to school try and understand the reasons why and tell the school as soon as possible.

The school will:

  • discuss your child’s attendance with you
  • agree a plan for improvement
  • work with you to support your child and deal with the situation

Support from our attendance advisory service

Your child’s school may refer you to us for advice and guidance. We’ll arrange to meet you at home or at your child’s school to discuss:

  • the reasons for your child's low attendance
  • consider your views on the situation
  • create a plan to help you get your child back to attending school regularly
  • take formal action to address the situation, where necessary

We may need to meet with you more than once.
