The Royal Borough of Greenwich is devastated by the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who died peacefully at Balmoral today, Thursday September 8, aged 96.

The Queen was a regular visitor to the borough with her late husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and Baron Greenwich. In 2012, it was our great privilege to be made the first Royal borough in more than 80 years, as part of her Diamond Jubilee.  The rare honour was given in recognition of the historic links we have with the Royal Family, links we remain very proud of.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Anthony Okereke, said: “The Queen was a remarkable sovereign who leaves behind a hole in our borough and our hearts. The example she set as a public servant was a humbling demonstration of a life dedicated to duty and the diverse communities she represented as Head of State. She was an inspiration to us all.”

Residents of the borough who would like to pay their respects are encouraged to sign the electronic book of condolence issued by Buckingham Palace or physical books of condolence available at Woolwich Town Hall, The Eltham Centre or The Greenwich Centre.

Residents are invited to join the Multifaith and Community Service - Act of Remembrance on Thursday 15 September at Woolwich Town Hall. Residents are asked to respect the Palace’s wishes of donations to charity in place of floral tributes.

Flags will be flown at half-mast, before being raised on Saturday for the National Proclamation of the new monarch and returning to half-mast for the national mourning period. Woolwich Town Hall will also be lit up purple in memory of Her Majesty.

Council services will run as normal during the mourning period, but please refer to the Council website for event or meeting cancellations.
