New addresses
All premises must have an approved address. This is so they are easy to find for deliveries and in an emergency.
We have the legal power to issue new and amend existing addresses. This is to make sure that they follow standard national addressing protocols.
Street names
We maintain a list of suitable approved names for new streets and buildings.
Download the approved names list:
We will only consider names from the list. To suggest possible names for us to consider, email naming-numbering@royalgreenwich.gov.uk. We will send you the guidelines.
House names
For private homes, you may choose a name of your own but it will not be part of the official postal address.
Numbering
When we number properties these national standard rules apply:
- in a close, the numbers run clockwise using consecutive numbers. Unless the close can be extended or serves more than about 30 homes
- for any other street, odd numbers are used on the left and even numbers on the right, with your back to St Paul's Cathedral
- each external main entrance should have a distinct number. Internal flats can then be separately numbered
- with extensions to streets, additional properties must be numbered into the existing street
Renumbering
When someone converts a property or there is a change of use, the whole building may need to be renumbered. This may mean existing addresses may change to avoid confusion.
There will be additional paperwork and costs to pay before you request a new address. You will also need to consult with interested parties first.
We have the right to re-number an existing address if a property is created without planning permission or uses an unauthorised or confusing address.
Postcodes
The Royal Mail's Address Management Centre allocate postcodes. We have no powers in this. Do not assume the postcode for a property until it is confirmed by Royal Mail.
Marketing new properties
Do not pre-empt our decision on the addressing of a new property or development.
If using a marketing name in any promotional material, you should make it clear that the name is not automatically part of the official address.
Using names for marketing can lead to legal problems. Especially if someone buys a property that is marketed under an unapproved name.
In these cases, we will not accept responsibility or liability for additional fees and costs.
We will not go against standard national addressing protocols.
