What Green Flag awards are

The Green Flag Award is a national benchmark for parks and green spaces, recognised by the UK government. It indicates that a park:

  • is well-maintained and clean
  • has excellent facilities
  • meets high environmental standards
  • engages with the community
  • is safe and welcoming

Each award is valid for one year, with sites reinspected annually to maintain their status.

Our twin towns

Maribor, Slovenia

Twinned since 1966

Maribor is Slovenia's second-largest city, a riverside university town with over 1,000 years of history. Known for:

  • its international Lent Festival
  • local vineyards and the world’s oldest vine (over 400 years old)
  • winter tourism, with 63km of ski slopes

Reinickendorf, Germany

Twinned during the Cold War era

Located in former West Berlin, Reinickendorf shares a post-war history with Greenwich. This includes:

  • Developing new communities following the second world war similar to Thamesmead
  • a shift from industry to tourism, much like Greenwich

Reinickendorf  also displays Greenwich gifts including a red telephone box and pillar box by Lake Tegel

Tema, Ghana

Twinned in 2000

Tema is a port town near Accra and lies on the same Meridian line as Greenwich. Highlights of the partnership include:

  • ICT learning centre opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 2000
  • a converted Greenwich ICT bus donated in 2005, filled with books and computers
  • regular youth exchanges and education-focused collaboration

Royal Greenwich Town Twinning Association
