A School Street is when all or part of a street is closed to motor vehicles at school drop-off and pick-up times, Monday to Friday during the school term. Families can walk, wheel, cycle or scoot to school instead.

School Streets help to:

  • reduce traffic around schools at peak times
  • reduce road traffic collisions
  • improve air quality
  • encourage sustainable travel
  • encourage exercise

How School Streets work

The schools close the street each day using collapsible bollards or cones, between:

  • 8am to 9:30am
  • 3pm to 4pm

School staff will always allow access for emergency vehicles and Blue Badge holders.

Residents who live on a School Street should try to avoid coming and going during the closure but can contact the school for access in an emergency.

Improving School Streets

We’re starting a new engagement process to improve our School Streets programme. This will include:

  • the existing School Streets
  • 21 new School Streets

This process will involve three stages:

  • pre-engagement to understand community perspectives
  • formal engagement to gather views on the scheme
  • statutory consultation which is a legal requirement so that the people who have provided their feedback can influence the decision before it is made

Future School Streets

We want to create more School Streets and work with local schools to consider potential new sites.

A suitable road for a School Street:

  • has a low to medium volume of traffic
  • has no bus routes
  • does not disproportionately restrict access for residents

It’s also important that school staff and parents support having a School Street. They should be willing to reduce their car use in favour of more active and sustainable travel.

Schools should contact us by email at schoolstreets@royalgreenwich.gov.uk
