The Royal Borough of Greenwich is pleased with the High Court’s landmark ruling today, that the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) across all of London is lawful.

This is a huge victory in the fight for clean air and a crucial step forward in protecting the health of all residents in Royal Greenwich from toxic air pollution.

We wouldn’t drink dirty water, so we shouldn’t accept breathing dirty air. High levels of air pollution disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, exacerbating existing health inequalities.

If we don’t take significant action, we will not meet the ambitious target set out in our Carbon Neutral Plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030. In our borough transport alone is 31% of our borough’s total carbon emissions. This is not only for our benefit, but to protect future generations who live in Royal Greenwich long after us.

For those residents who are eligible and need access to a car, we would encourage them to take advantage of Transport for London’s scrappage scheme as soon as possible – which we successfully campaigned for to be extended to more residents. Only 18% of vehicles in outer London are not already ULEZ compliant, and the Mayor’s generous scrappage scheme was expanded to help more people with the change.

We’re also continuing to campaign for greater connectivity in Royal Greenwich through public transport, including more buses and the DLR Expansion to Thamesmead.
