Unmarried residents who lost their partner as far back as April 2001 could be entitled to financial support.

The Department for Work and Pensions announced changes to its Bereavement Support Payment and Widowed Parent’s Allowance in February 2023 to include unmarried couples with dependants, instead of just those who were married or in a civil partnership.

This change in law means anyone whose partner died while they were living together and sharing responsibility of or expecting a child, may be owed money.

Councillor Mariam Lolavar, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Business and Skills said: “The changes are a positive step to recognising that families can be made up in all shapes and sizes. When dealing with the loss of a loved one, more should be considered to provide as much support as possible for those who need it.

“With added pressures of the cost of living crisis, if you or someone you know could be entitled to receive this backdated Bereavement Benefit, I urge you to contact the Council for advice and support.”
