DG cities, the Council’s urban innovation company, is installing 40 electricity monitors across council homes in the borough as part of an energy savings trial.

Council residents will be put in control of their energy usage in real-time as the monitors connect to an app on their smartphone and they’ll be able to see how much money individual electrical appliances cost to run.

Participating residents will have access to an ‘energy saving’ community group where they can connect with other participants and share and receive energy saving tips and advice. They can also receive tailored recommendations on how to use less energy, helping them to save energy every step of the way.

DG cities is still looking for more council tenants to take part. If you would like to get involved and be part of this energy savings trial, head to www.dgcities.com/greenwich-energy-reduction-trial

Cllr Pat Slattery, Cabinet Member for Housing, Homelessness and Neighbourhoods, said:

“One of our missions outlined in Our Greenwich, is to play an active role in tackling the climate crisis and improving environmental sustainability. This is a fantastic way for residents to understand how much energy they use and find out ways they can reduce their monthly bills. It’s also a great way of connecting with others in the community by sharing tips and advice. Learning more about your energy consumption helps you see how you can take part in tackling the wider climate crisis.”

Trevor Dorling, Director of DG Cities said:

This is an exciting and innovative way of potentially helping Council tenants in Royal Greenwich save energy using digital technology. Working together with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, we want to understand whether smart technology,  like energy monitors can reduce carbon emissions whilst giving residents access to more information about their energy consumption and opportunities to reduce their own personal impact on the climate crisis. If successful, we hope the trial can be extended to more homes in the future”
