The death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II brings great sorrow to myself and the whole of Royal Greenwich.

She was not just a figurehead of our nation, but an inspiration to everyone in public life. Her dedication to the communities and people she served was unwavering; her quiet leadership, the rock that supported our country through unprecedented times of success and despair.

Her phenomenal reign spanned eight decades, though her sense of duty was evident long before this as the young Princess Elizabeth. My fellow Councillors and I can only imagine the determination and resilience needed to fulfil such a life-long role – that she maintained her humour and integrity throughout is a testament to the woman she was.

My sincere condolences go to her family, who have lost a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, but also to everyone affected by this sad loss. As Mayor, I know I speak for the entire of Royal Greenwich when I express great sadness for the passing of Her Majesty.  We will all miss her constant presence in our lives, but will all be better for having known her as our Queen.
